Toy Box Theatre Company Presents
The Empress and El Diablo
When forced to move back in with his parents, Eddie seeks the guidance of a fortune teller whose mysterious and shocking counsel isn't quite what he was expecting. The Empress and El Diablo follows Eddie Roberts, through dreams and reality, as he valiantly struggles with his horrifying destiny, his overbearing family, and a girlfriend who's too tired to fool around. Inspired by the writings of C.G. Jung and the Tarot of Marseilles, this production marks Toy Box Theatre Company's tenth season. The Empress and El Diablo will be performed with a live garage rock score by Colonna Sonora.
Beginning March 16, 2011

In a time-twisted riff on the nature of obsession and old-testament sacrifice, Soren Kierkegaard needs to get into the mind of Abraham at that moment on the mountain with the boy and the knife. And then there's a fiancée to repel, a father to satisfy, and 20th-century philosophy to invent.
After six years and seven productions, the multi disciplinary ensemble Toy Box Theatre Company is taking on an age-old story with classic conceptions and a sense of humor. Throughout history, life has always proven to be arduous and laughable all at once. When It Stands Still captures that idea while maintaining a respect for intellect and wit. Just think circumcisions, a dysfunctional engagement, a know-it-all angel, Soren Kierkegaard and the faith driven story of Abraham and Isaac.
When It Stands Still is a romantic meditation on the nature of obsession and sacrifice. The Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard is attempting to get into the mind of Abraham at the moment before he makes his ultimate sacrifice. Abraham is bidding to get back into his wife Sarah's good graces while Sarah is fighting to get her story heard. All this and a fiancée to alienate, a father to satisfy, and 20th-century philosophy to invent.
When It Stands Still was written by Ellen Margolis, who was awarded the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival award for "Excellence in Playwriting" for Toy Box's production of her play How To Draw Mystical Creatures. For a year Toy Box has been working with Ellen to develop When It Stands Still. Ellen was awarded a Pacific University Faculty Development Grant to fly to New York for the first staged reading of the play last December. Toy Box was also awarded the Nancy Quinn Fund Grant, which helped to support the development of the piece.
This is also Toy Box's second collaboration with violist/composer Leanne Darling who will be performing live. Leanne was honored as the 2007 NYITA winner for "Best Original Score" for her work on Toy Box's production of The Landlord.
Jason Schuler has been with this project since the beginning, directing the reading of the play last December as part of our BluePrints Series. Recently Jason directed Toy Box co-founder David Michael Holmes in Van Driver at the Cherry Lane Theatre.
